As the past prejudices of older generations are wiped away, the new and open-minded viewpoints of the nation’s youth are supporting changes for the gay community. This has brought about many positive changes in the country on many fronts.

Younger people are more accepting, to a large degree, of homosexuality that past generations have been. This has allowed many gay couples to live more openly in society and to fight for equal rights in areas such as marriage and military service. The media, books, television, movies and other entertainment outlets have been increasingly featuring gay couples, transgender and bi-sexual individuals in a positive light.

The issues and obstacles that this portion of the population have to face are being brought to the attention of society, making others aware of the struggle for equal rights. Gay couples have had to fight tooth and nail to secure rights for marriage and other legal areas that can adversely affect things when one partner passes away. This has been especially problematic with custody of children, health insurance and related issues. This has been brought with greater push for equality before the federal government.

The younger generation currently is the most open to this type of legislation and open-minded acceptance to homosexuality. As the years progress, the youth will be entering leadership roles that will give them the opportunity to continue the positive changes that are now starting to occur. This inevitable change starts with the new perspectives that are spreading throughout society with the younger generation.

The Changing Perspective of Homosexuality in the United States

The United States has started to see greater advances in the perspective of homosexuality over the last few years. This has not only been a surge of empowerment but also of legislation.

One of the most contentious issues in the last decade has been the argument over gay marriage. State by state, the battle has been on to pass legislation either to ban or approve the union of a gay couple in their constitutions. As more states have made it legal, it has put increasing pressure on other states to follow suit. This has been key to issues related to gay marriage such as life insurance, guardianship of children and other issues that are adversely affected when a ban is in place.

This same change has been seen in the United States military, which has carried a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy regarding homosexuality for a long time. Current legislative changes have been made to get rid of this policy, opening the doors for gays in the military to be open and others to enter without fear of being discovered and discharged.

Society is slowly starting to change its perspective on homosexuality as well, opening up more minds to a lifestyle that was posed in a negative light in the past. This will hopefully continue to grow as television shows, movies and books show this lifestyle increasingly in a positive way. Then acceptance will be offered more and the gay community can enjoy the benefits of equal treatment from others.

Christian Churches for Homosexuals

Homosexual Christians often have a difficult time finding churches where they feel comfortable. For many, the challenge is finding a church that believes in the Bible’s teachings and supports the rights of homosexuals. Even if you have had bad experiences with churches in the past, you might find that there are some houses of worship in your community that fit your beliefs.

Progressive Christian Churches

Many Christian churches have become more progressive in recent years. They follow the Bible’s teachings, but they focus on messages of hope, love, and inclusion. In some cases, Christian churches have taken stances that highlight the hypocrisy of homophobia and inequality. Search the Internet for churches in your community that have taken similar stances. These are usually places where you can feel free to worship openly instead of hiding your orientation.

Online Christian Churches

If you live in a small community with limited church options, then you might want to find an online church that can help you learn more about the Bible without compromising your inner beliefs by conforming to a homophobic agenda. Jesus taught his followers to treat others with kindness and acceptance. You should expect the same thing from your church. If you cannot find a church that meets your needs, then look for online churches that can give you direction while you study the Bible.

There are a growing number of options for Christian homosexuals. When you put yourself out there in a positive way, you might find that there are communities all around you that can accept your orientation and your beliefs in a mature, informed manner.

Chicago Movements for Gay and Lesbian Rights

The Society for Human Rights, which was established in Chicago in 1924, is known as the country’s first recognized entity with the purpose of promoting gay rights. The organization strived to bring homosexual individuals together and education and increase awareness of homosexuality to legislators and legal authorities. However in 1925, police places society members under arrest, which ended the organization and no record exists of another Chicago gay rights association until three decades later.

Early on in the 1950s, homosexual men and women established a variety of groups, including the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis, both with local chapters located in Chicago in 1955. The organizations strived to educate the public of gay men and lesbians and secure social acceptance.

The University of Chicago Gay Liberation Front organization was established in the late 1960s led by an individual who previously attended the University of Chicago.  In early 1970, the Chicago Gay Liberation took in the university group and organized various gay pride events including the city’s original Gay Pride Parade.

In the later part of the 1980s, various gay and lesbian activists partnered with business owners directed a victorious lobbying endeavor that convinced the council of the city to enact the Chicago Human Rights Ordinance that defends gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals from prejudice and inequality. This effort led to a joint venture with the Illinois Federation for Human Rights, which changed to Equality Illinois.  In 1997, the city of Evanston became Illinois’ first city to offer protection to people identified as transgender and in 2002 Chicago transgender activists successfully petitioned to include gender identity to the Chicago Human Rights Ordinance.

Speaking To Your Child About Gay And Lesbian Relationships

In order to raise well-rounded children, many parents consider it necessary to teach their children about gay and lesbian relationships. Children who are especially young may at first only be aware of heterosexual relationships, but as they become older, they will likely become aware of other types of lifestyles, whether through media messages, friends, school or otherwise. To make it easier on yourself, be prepared to speak to your children about the importance of accepting people who come from all lifestyles from an early age, preferably before they reach their teenage years.

To start the discussion, you should determine how much your child has already heard about same-sex relationships. From there, try your best to have an open discussion that is driven by questions, honest answers, and active dialog. Emphasize that same sex couples can have loving relationships, just in the same way that heterosexual couples do. Also, stress that a person cannot control who they choose to love.

From there, you can use the discussion as a launching pad for other issues such as safe sex, the importance of trust in relationships, and how to foster strong, lasting relationship with people of both sexes. You can also branch out into political topics that are currently “hot button” topics such as gay marriage, and gay rights. Try to put yourself in your child’s shoes and explain these complicated concepts in ways that are easy to understand.

The topic of gay and lesbian relationships can be one that will cause several difficult questions to arise, but it is something that should be tackled as your child is still young. If you need help with finding ways to talk to your children about gay and lesbian relationships, you can find many materials online, and you can also consider using media, such as television shows that feature gay characters in a positive way.

Finding A Gay-Friendly Christian Church

If you are someone who chooses to lead a gay lifestyle, you may run into some difficulty when trying to find a church that will be accepting of your lifestyle. Although movement is being made towards churches that are more accepting of people of all backgrounds, many churches who profess the fundamental Christian faith will teach, by principle that being gay or lesbian is a sin. Ideally, you need to find a church that is accepting to everyone, regardless of their lifestyle choices.

You can start by researching churches in your hometown to see if any seem to be openly accepting. You can also call the pastor and ask bluntly for the church’s thoughts about people who are gay and lesbian. In order to evaluate the church in the best way, try to attend a church in person rather than just relying on what the pastor tells you. Of course, if you end up noticing that the church does not seem to be accepting, you cannot automatically assume that every single member of the congregation will shun your choices, but if the church as a whole clings to the idea of homosexuality as a sin, your road to finding acceptance there will likely be quite rocky.

If you are not immediately comfortable with approaching churches directly, keep in mind that word of mouth can be an excellent resource. If you have any friends who share your lifestyle choices, ask them to see if they can suggest area churches that are welcoming to a gay and lesbian lifestyle. Keep in mind that you may have to travel outside of your immediate area in order to find such a church, especially if you live in a small town.

If, after a dedicated search, you are unable to find a suitable place of research that offers acceptance and makes you feel comfortable, consider the idea of meeting with a group of other Christians who are accepting of all lifestyles to study the Word and help each other through life’s struggles.

How To Find Local Businesses That Support A Homosexual Lifestyle

If you are looking for ways to support the gay community in your town, one of the easiest ways to do so is to seek out gay-friendly businesses in your area, and strive to give them your patronage whenever possible. However, if you choose to undertake this mission, you may find that it’s often harder than you might imagine to find businesses that are particularly friendly and welcoming towards the gay community.

If your community publishes a newspaper for the gay community, their classified advertisements section will be one of your best resources. Although some companies have to work very hard to demonstrate that they are welcoming to those who uphold a gay lifestyle, those who take it upon themselves to advertise in such media outlets are likely at the forefront of offering employment opportunities to all.

When you find a company that you think may be supportive towards the gay lifestyle, ask for an employment application. Check to see if it mentions that the company does not discriminate against a person’s sexual orientation. If this is mentioned, it’s a good clue that the company would be willing to accept the lifestyle of a gay employee. Keep in mind however, that most companies must pledge, by law to be an “equal opportunity employer,” which means that at least in theory, they cannot discriminate against someone just because they choose a homosexual lifestyle. In most cases though, actions speak louder than legal verbage, so, if you have any gay friends, ask them where they work, and whether or not they feel that the work environment is supportive towards their chosen lifestyle.

You can also check to see if a company requires its employees to go through diversity training, and if this training involves a segment which covers gay and lesbian lifestyle choices. In general, although diversity comes in a multitude of forms, companies who have dedicated themselves towards embracing diversity will be more accepting towards people who choose a homosexual lifestyle.

Never Fear in Boston: Homosexuality Celebrates

Everyone wants community, friendship, a way to identify with what makes you you; but in this day and age, it’s hard to find that commonality, especially…if you’re gay. Take Boston for example: you have your theaters, festivals, museums, libraries, you name it. But it’s all for nothing if you can’t share any of it with no one. A community of like-minded individuals is important to have. A neighborhood that is very pro-homosexuality is essential to a good quality of living.

So if you’re a homosexual, lesbian, trans-gender or transvestite, or bisexual, try and find a place around Boston’s “South End,” known for its heavy population of homosexuals living together as a community should. Boston apartments are known for this in the area, not to mention the bars or nightclubs such as “The Alley” on 14 Pi Alley or the “Fritz Lounge” on 26 Chandler St. Even the drag queens live in luxury right at “Jacque’s Cabaret,” enjoying the lights and love and music of what makes drag so divine.

If clubs aren’t your scene and you want something more outdoor and public, you can actually enjoy the South End part of Boston even better with the premier food festival to stand above all other food festivals, the “Taste of the South End,” an event benefiting the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. Of course, you also have the greatest event to celebrate homosexuality in Massachusetts: the Boston Pride Festival and Parade.

Do research and you’ll find there’s even more out there for you and your friends to enjoy without feeling like you’re left out of the crowd or society. Your homosexuality doesn’t have to keep you in the dark. Try these areas out in Boston and appreciate who you are! Who you are is supposed to be grand and unique. Let Boston bring that all out for you.
